What to Know Before Using a Preferred Auto Shop
There are several reasons why insurers direct policyholders to their preferred auto shops to repair car damage. First, using a preferred auto shop expedites the repair process because car owners don’t have to spend time searching for reputable and reliable shops. Second, repair work can usually begin immediately when using a preferred shop. And lastly, the preferred shop typically offers the insurer discounts on parts and labor, which helps the insurer keep repair costs to a minimum.
While this sounds like the ideal situation for all parties involved, there is always the possibility that you will not be satisfied with the work that was performed, the replacement parts, or both. If you ever find yourself in this situation, you are not without options.
Communicate your concerns
Most importantly, remember that good communication is key. Calmly and maturely discuss your concerns with the preferred shop owner and then see whether and how the owner is willing to address your concerns. Chances are you’ll find the owner willing to put the needs of his customers first by making the situation right. Besides, the preferred auto shop’s agreement with the insurer probably includes a commitment to provide repairs that are both safe and proper.
Escalate the matter, if needed
Should you find the preferred auto shop owner or representative unwilling to cooperate, be careful what you’re asked to sign. You’ll have no recourse if you sign something that says you are satisfied with the repair work performed. Then contact your auto insurance company or the claims department and explain the situation. If your complaint sounds credible, the insurance agent or adjuster will probably contact the preferred shop to try to work out a solution. Typically, the insurer stands by the preferred shop’s work and guarantees its quality.
If you still are not satisfied, your state’s insurance division may be able to help. Arbitration may be needed (provided it’s an option). If the car damage was significant, at this point you may wish to consider hiring an attorney to help resolve the matter.
