What Information Does a Prospective Auto Insurance Agent Need?

  • Driver’s license: You’ll need to provide the state of issuance along with the license number.

  • Vehicle details: Write down the make, model and year of the vehicle you want to insure.

  • Vehicle Identification Number: More commonly referred to as the VIN, you’ll find this long number in the far corner of the vehicle’s dashboard, near the windshield on the driver’s side. Or it might be listed on the door jamb on the driver’s side. If you can’t find it in either place, look on your insurance card or vehicle registration receipt.

  • Mileage estimate: This isn’t the odometer reading. Rather it’s the approximate number of miles you drive per year.

  • Violation/Accident information: You’ll get a more accurate auto insurance quote if you’re upfront about any traffic violations and accidents. Never assume the insurer “won’t find out” about something on your driving record. The insurer will always review your record before securing a policy binder, and that could lead to a higher rate than you were quoted.

  • Coverage needs: Do some research before obtaining quotes. Learn the different coverage options and the protection each offers. Know the mandatory coverage requirements in your state. Figure out a deductible you can afford. And don’t worry; you can always ask the auto insurance agent for help!

With this information handy, you’re ready to begin requesting quotes. To make comparison shopping easier, be sure to request the same coverage options from every insurer.
