If I’m in an accident what should I do?

  • Step 1: Turn the vehicle’s hazard lights on, get out of traffic’s way, and move to a safe location. If injuries are involved, dial 911 and request medical help. Also call the police. Even in minor incidents, an officer will assess the situation and complete an accident report.
  • Step 2: Once the situation is secure and all passengers are safe or getting assistance, you’ll next want to exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, vehicle information, and auto insurance information with all other drivers. Get complete contact information from all witnesses, too. If you called the police, similar information will be included in the accident report.
  • Step 3: You’ll also need to contact your auto insurer. You’ll find contact information on your insurance card. If your insurer offers convenient online claims reporting, take advantage of it if you can. When you call to report a claim, be sure to write down the full name of the person you speak to, their phone number or extension, and claim number. This information will come in handy should you have questions later on.
  • Step 4: Allow the auto insurance company time to process your claim. How long the insurer takes to process and settle any claims varies. More severe accidents with injuries likely will take longer. But really, all sorts of issues can cause delays. Do what you can to speed the process along by reporting accidents right away and quickly delivering any requested information.
